It was viewed as a career rooted in:

creativity,

insight,

storytelling,

communication,

brand image shaping,

instinct,

aesthetics, and

the use of digital no-code tools.

It was a career largely free from programming, algorithms, and mathematics. However, this perception was never entirely accurate.

A significant portion of marketing has always been deeply technical and algorithmic, involving:

the purchase of advertising space and real-time bidding,

budget allocation across channels,

audience targeting and segmentation,

personalization and recommendation systems,

attribution modeling and marketing mix analysis, demand forecasting, and

the analysis of web and search data.

In most companies, the bulk of the advertising budget is directed precisely toward these quantitative functions.

Nevertheless, these technical aspects were often underrepresented in university curricula. Many graduates encountered them only upon entering the workforce, and many such roles were filled by individuals with more technical backgrounds—such as mathematics, statistics, or computer science. The perception of marketing as a non-technical field has always been inaccurate; today, in the age of Artificial Intelligence, it has become downright dangerous.

The very tasks that once made marketing appear to be a non-technical “haven” are among the first that Artificial Intelligence has mastered.

Drafting advertising copy, articles, and posts;

composing emails and social media captions;

creating presentations;

producing and editing audiovisual content;

collecting, descriptively analyzing, and summarizing research data;

and even utilizing basic desktop or browser-based applications tailored for marketing:

all of these tasks are now performed rapidly and automatically by AI tools that are constantly improving—with results already of such high quality that companies are rethinking their hiring strategies.

The signs are evident in the numbers. According to the Content Marketing Institute’s 2026 Career and Salary Outlook: Content and Marketing Professionals, one in three companies is reducing entry-level hiring in marketing. The typical tasks of a junior-level role are precisely the kind of work that Artificial Intelligence can now perform in a matter of seconds.

Creativity

Faced with this threat, many take refuge in a reassuring belief: that marketing is, at its core, a creative science; that true creativity is exclusively human; and that, therefore, Artificial Intelligence cannot truly replace humans in marketing.

This is a comforting idea, yet it does not hold up—for three reasons.

1. An increasing number of creative tasks fall within the capabilities of AI.

2. “Human creativity” is a flattering, catch-all term. Basing one’s career solely on creativity requires a level of originality and aesthetic sensibility that most people—on most days—do not attain.

3. Creativity is only one of many facets of marketing. Even if it were to remain forever beyond the reach of AI, it would safeguard only a small segment of the job market.

The Other Side of the Coin

The very same force that “threatens” the unprepared offers a remarkable opportunity to those who are prepared. Technical proficiency was once a formidable barrier: becoming a skilled programmer or data scientist required years of effort.

Artificial Intelligence is dramatically shifting this landscape. Anyone capable of clearly articulating an intent and effectively guiding AI tools can now produce functional software, applications, dashboards, automations—and even machine learning models—that once would have required a team of experts and a great deal more time.

A deep technical background is being superseded by clear thinking and the ability to evaluate ideas and outcomes. The advantage no longer lies with those who know how to code, but rather with those who know what is worth building and can direct Artificial Intelligence to bring it to life.

AI adoption among businesses remains low; according to 2025 data from Eurostat, approximately 20% of European enterprises utilize Artificial Intelligence. Most companies are aware that they have fallen behind, yet they often lack anyone in-house capable of providing the necessary assistance.

A marketing graduate who can truly handle ΑΙ is not just one in a thousand; they are rare and highly valuable. Moreover, companies are increasingly willing to hire such graduates from affordable, talent-rich markets, offering competitive salaries and excellent prospects to individuals who would prefer to remain and work from their own country.

What needs to change?

Use Artificial Intelligence. Become proficient at leveraging AI to handle technical tasks that were once out of reach:

analyzing and modeling diverse types of data (tables, text, time series, audiovisual material),

creating and performing end-to-end optimization of advertising campaigns,

transforming ideas into fully-fledged software applications.

Build an AI portfolio. Anyone can claim to use Artificial Intelligence on their resume; what makes you stand out is demonstrating it in practice.

Showcase your work online—on GitHub or a simple personal website. Your portfolio could include applications and tools built using AI, data analyses,

machine learning models,

experiments comparing different AI models and tools, or agentic automations for repetitive tasks.

Learn to spot errors made by Artificial Intelligence. AI is impressive, but it can be careless. A skill that remains highly valuable is the ability to critically evaluate its output: identifying mistakes and correcting them.

This is precisely what the surviving junior-level roles now entail; one can practice this by treating every response from Artificial Intelligence as a draft to be verified and improved—never as the final answer.

The era of the non-technical marketing professional is coming to an end. However, Artificial Intelligence is not merely a threat. A genuine opportunity lies hidden within this upheaval—one that will be seized by those students and academic institutions that take the necessary steps, while others hesitate or remain oblivious to the threat.

For many years, marketing was considered a viable and attractive option for students seeking a successful career—one that did not necessarily require the development of deep technical skills.
